Blog # 9 - "Horatio Alger" by Harlon L. Dalton

Question # 3

Dalton's argument cannot be disputed.  Pretty much everyone  today is aware of the myths that seduced countless immigrant families and the probability of succeeding.  But we don't generally think too much on the topic;  The myths that he talks are in plain sight, which is why i suppose we tend to filter them out, just as an ears filter out constant in the background.
To help his argument, Dalton also mentions the other side of the argument.  He admits that the myth gives the poor hope and motivation to work harder.  Then he shoots down the statement by saying that it still does not change the fact that it is nearly impossible to leave poverty with motivation and hope alone.

  1. Do you agree with Dalton, that it is nearly impossible to escape poverty with only motivation and hope? If so, what else do you think is necessary to overcome this?

    1. I think escaping poverty with motivation and hope is pretty much impossible. However, motivation does not only help but is necessary. If your poor, you need to have the determination to change your social class or it wont happen.
Other things necessary is talent (such as intelligence)and location. If you in the United States it is possible to escape povery, but if you were in Aferica, it would be "nearly impossible." Even within the United States location matters. Living in the city gives people a better chance than living in the country side.

    2. Why would being in the United States make escaping poverty "Impossible" while it would only be "nearly impossible" in Africa? And does living in the city give people a better chance than in the country side? I've noticed that if you go into cities the price for everything is always higher. From a simple sandwich to gas to clothes.

    3. Good point about the expensive sandwiches (a reason why people who retire often move to the country side), but the city offers opportunity in the form of jobs. Also, the pay is usually higher.
As your first question, i think you mean possible instead of "impossible" and that is also because United States has the resources and job market that poorer countries such as Africa does not.
